Learn how to make Ben's latest design, the pixel binding. The Pixel binding is a structure in which the boards (and the spine) are made up of a multitude of little squares of cardboards (the 'pixels') which hinge with one another and thus give the binding a remarkable feel, halfway between a hard cover and a soft cover binding. The grid visual that results from the board composition is a striking feature that can lead to many different design concepts.

  • For the first time a tutorial is available in a deluxe binding by Ben. What better way to appreciate a new binding style than by reading about it in a book bound in that very style? Ben had a lot of fun designing, and executing 10 copies of this binding. The boards are decorated using a unique decorative technique, in colours evocative of both the tutorial, and the model described step by step in it. Limited to 10 copies, numbered and signed by Ben. Pixel binding Japanese style. Calfskin, paper, suede, foil. Innovative decorative technique.

Testimonial
I really enjoyed making this binding. Beyond the pixel binding itself, I learned some interesting things. The tutorial is clear and well explained, it's not difficult to follow. A first reading gives a good overall view of the project. It's a binding that is very fast for the quality of its result. In total, I counted about eight hours of work excluding drying time. It will probably be faster the next times as I become more comfortable with the technique. I wonder how much I can gain in efficiency with practice.

The few difficulties I encountered were linked either to mistakes on my part, or to a lack of experience with certain materials, or to external parameters. But I never had any frustration with the tutorial or its explanations.

I can't wait to try this binding again and to be able to test things in terms of decorations. I wonder what kind of results I will get with different materials, if changing the pixel size greatly changes the result, etc...
