This distinguished and very rare bookbinding machine was probably designed primarily to create bevels on the outside of book boards — a finish that was fashionable in industrial bookbinding in the last century.

I have used it mainly to bevel on the inside, to create hinges for boxes, portfolios, and the like. Beveling boards at 45 degrees results in beautiful hinges - clean, sharp, durable, in one word: perfect (see my 2016 blog post on this subject).
The machine operates as follows: a vertically mounted circular blade removes a thin strip of material along a piece of cardboard that is hand-fed into a V-shaped guide. A sharpening device allows easy refreshing of the blade's cutting edge, which would otherwise quickly become blunt and unusable. The guide can be adjusted as desired to vary both the bevel angle and its width.

This is a very robust machine, and low maintenance.
