Envelope binding

A quest for the minimal

This book is a step-by-step guide to an attractive and reversible binding process that has the added advantage of ensuring that the book can be opened easily.

The envelope binding has been the focus of bookbinder and designer Clara Gevaert’s research. As a result, she has developed a new technique for producing a split-board paper binding made up of folds, joints and insertions of the paper. This technique combines rigour and creative freedom.

Suitable for all levels, this user-friendly manual includes suggestions for different variants to make the most of the aesthetic possibilities offered by this technique.

About Clara Gevaert

Born in Brussels in 1979, Clara Gevaert grew up in a family where books were important.
In 2005, she graduated from her training in Bookbinding, gilding and paper at the National School of Visual Arts in La Cambre.

Clara Gevaert has collaborated since her beginnings with contemporary artists, publishers, Belgian and foreign gallery owners (Rodney Graham, Raphaël Van Lerberghe, Heide Hinrichs, Galerie Jan Mot, Christophe Daviet-Thery, JPB Éditions, More Publishers, Gevaert Éditions…).
Alongside her professional practice, she began teaching bookbinding in 2008. This transmission becomes essential in its research dynamics and the two bookbinding activities become inseparable, causing permanent crossings.

She is now a bookbinding teacher at ENSAV de la Cambre. She also gives lessons in bookbinding and book decor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Marche-en-Famenne, at Wittockiana and at the Atelier du Livre in Mariemont.
Her work is present in several public and private collections in Belgium and abroad.
